The power of breath

Do you know that feeling? The more you have to do, the faster the days go by and you find yourself racing against time to get everything done?

When you're already exhausted at the beginning of the week, itcan be really hard to keep going until Friday evening. So low energy can unfortunately invite the famous self-sabotage mechanisms. The best way to observe this is in your consumption habits:

Do you reach for more coffee, energy drinks, or sugary snacks to boost your concentration in the short term? Or do you drink more beer after work to relax in the evening? Do you find yourself scrolling through social media, doing unnecessary online shopping, or watching an entire Netflix series in one go when you're overtired?

The ego likes to package such behavior as "self-care. " You realize that it doesn't really have anything to do with self-care when you honestly don't feel any better afterward . Observe when and how often you actually use such coping strategies to compensate for your stress.

WE HAVE NOT LEARNED TO DEAL WITH STRESS DIFFERENTLY

Perhaps you don't notice it because others do it too? That's quite possible, because such unconscious habits are socially accepted and deeply rooted in our culture. So it's no surprise that most people are often so tired that they work toward the weekend or their vacation.

My teacher Tsakpo once said to me:

"Annabelle, you don't need a vacation!
Nature teaches us this, because it never takes a break, and neither does our body. You are nature. You have two legs, and when you walk, one is always working while the other takes a break. That way, you can never end up overexerting yourself."

These words of his have stayed with me for years. Especially when I hearhow rapidly thenumbers of people affected by burnout, depression, and anxiety are rising. Mental illness is currently the second leading cause of incapacity for work in Germany. The exponential growth of digitalization is accelerating the pace, but we humans can't keep up.

So how can we manage not to burn out in everyday life?

Today, I would like to give you a little task to help you find out for yourself what influences your own energy level.

Create two lists that you can continuously add to in order to explore yourself:

1. What drains my energy?

2. What gives me energy?

Explore yourself for a few weeks and observewhich thoughts, habits, things, methods, and even people are energy drainers or energy boosters in your life. Three guesses as to what I recommend as your next task?

Exactly: try to reduce the stressors and do more of what gives you energy. And nowin fall, that may be something completely different than in summer. Observe how your needs change now that the dark time of year is beginning.

LEARN TO BALANCE YOUR ENERGY LEVELS

My teacher's words have had a profound impact on my work as a yoga teacher. I have tried many different methods to explore myself. I really wanted to know how to do this and asked myself:

How can I create a good balance between tension and relaxation? And which methods will help me do that? Do I have to meditate for two hours? Do I have to do 90 minutes of yoga in the morning? Do I have to be extremely disciplined and set boundaries in this fast-paced world in order to maintain my mental health?

I found the answers in the power of conscious breathing. No method is as gentle and effective as this one. No other method can be practiced so spontaneously and in between other activities. You don't need a special place, special clothing, or equipment. Just 5 minutes of conscious breathing regulates your nervous system in such a way that you can continue working in a centered and focused manner.

If you feel like trying this out for yourself and learning easy exercises that will help you keep your energy levels balanced in your stressful everyday life, then come to my workshop next week.
